Self-love seems like an easy idea to latch onto. I mean, I should love myself, right? But this “me first mentality” is a lie that has been spoon fed to us and to our children by a culture that is obsessed with selfies, instant gratification and devices that are set up to cater to our every need.
The message is clear: “Loving yourself, and finding who you truly are is the way to happiness in this life.”
However, while we are a people who are more obsessed with this idea of self love and self care than ever before, statistics show that we are more depressed and anxious than ever before. Why is that? Could it be, that “self love” is a BIG FAT LIE.
The truth is, looking inward is not be the answer for fulfillment. Nowhere in God’s word does it say to love yourself. It doesn’t. In Mark chapter 12, Jesus commands that we, “Love your neighbor as yourself”, but he never tells us to love ourselves. He doesn’t need to. We already love ourselves. We have a selfish nature that leads us to self satisfaction and self indulgence. This is why it is so easy to believe the self-love lie. It goes right along with our self-serving feelings.
Secret – your feelings aren’t factual.
Secret – You will never find fulfillment in yourself.
You don’t have the power to fill yourself up! Only the Lord who made you and created you does.
Guys, the call to follow Christ is the call to die to yourself. In John chapter 3, Paul says, “He must become greater, I must become less”. This is a hard truth, but never the less, it is true. It’s one of what we call in our house God’s “upside down truths”. We think that we will be happier if we please ourselves, however, it is when we look to the Lord and put others first that we find true joy. So we should think of ourselves less and Jesus more, putting the needs of others before our own selfish desires.
We can try to love ourselves Ladies, but we can’t do it well. The Lord who made you and created you in His very image knows you, and trust me, He loves us way better than we could ever love ourselves.
